District September 2010 Print E-mail

What a great summer we had traveling around to different functions and being with friends.  There is still plenty of good riding weather left and we plan to get out as much as we can before we have to store the bike for the season.  August weather was been rather HOT and we had a bumper crop of pesky mosquitoes, so bug spray and water were in high demand.  There are a few more Fun-Raisers this year.  Please try to participate and have some fun.

The 2011 Wisconsin District Convention/Rally will be at the RainTree Resort on June 24 & 25, 2011.  You can make your reservations now by calling 608-254-8700 or 877-254-7400.  Remember to mention the GWRRA block when you call.  We have talked to many of the vendors that were at the rally this year and they are looking forward to returning next year.  If you know of anyone who would like to be a vendor at the rally.  Please let us know as soon as possible.  We would like to thank Bubba, Jan, and Toni for helping with the vendor contacts this year.

At the Wisconsin District Convention/Rally in June 2011 we will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of GWRRA in Wisconsin.  We would like each chapter to send us information on the start up of your chapter including dates and locations of their gatherings, past and present chapter directors, past and present chapter COYs and IOYs, awards, chapter and member growth, members involved in the different levels of the rider education program and pictures.  If you have any questions please give us a call at 920-261-7101 or e-mail us.  We would also like each chapter to bring their picture albums and scrapbooks so that we can put them on display.

The 2010 Fall OPS Meeting is at the RainTree on November 6.  The meeting will start at 9:00 a.m.  A deli sandwich lunch will be available for purchase at the RainTree like we did at the Spring OPS.  To make your reservations, call the RainTree at 608-254-8700 or 877-254-7400 and remember to mention the GWRRA block.?

This month I would like to talk about a couple of rider safety items that have come up in the last few months.

The first has to do with stop signs and group rides.  Two bikes stopped side by side at a stop sign may proceed through the intersection at the same time, then the next two bikes move forward and make their stop.  After making their stop, the two can cross the intersection.  The exception to this is if it is an organized event like a charity ride with controlled intersections.

The second has to do with cars that cross your path of travel.  As you ride, when you see a car, ask yourself what can he do to cause a problem.  They will turn in front of you, they will pull away from a stop sign in front of you, and they will change lanes with no warning.  Remember, keep asking yourself "what if" because they will do something stupid and you need to be ready to react and you will be the only one concerned with your safety.  Each of these things have happened to someone I know this summer and each one avoided a crash because they were alert and trained and took responsibility for their safety.

Being prepared to ride safe is no accident.
